What causes migraine aura itself?
I sometimes have an aura before the onset of pain. The appearance of it varies. Sometimes flashing lights, sometimes looks like a gloss or a waterfall that is difficult to see through. I had an in the morning which was annoying large and long lasting. Could see even with eyes closed. No other symptoms. Take 2 aspirin and went back to sleep, woke up fine. Currently taking a beta blocker to prevent migraine, but have had a lot of family stress lately. What makes this personal light show in my head?
Although the cause of a migraine not fully understood, most patients will likely have a genetic predisposition to them. About 80 percent of people who have headaches migraine have a family history of migraine. I used to think that the aura and headache in migraine were caused by blood vessels in the recruitment and then expansion (dilation) in the brain. However, recent research suggests that migraine symptoms are caused by changes in the activity of neurons (nerve cells in the brain), and that changes in blood vessels occur as a result.
