new migraine treatment

new migraine treatment

Smith on May 16, Glaxo-Kline Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Imitrex, announced it was releasing a new drug to treat migraines. The new drug was to be called Treximet and according to the manufacturers, would be a great improvement over Imitrex. As Imitrex, is meant to be taken at the onset of a migraine, but presumably works best and quickest way to reduce migraine pain. GSK has invested several years and millions of dollars researching and pre-marketing " Treximet in anticipation of FDA approval and product launch.

So what's the deal? Is this really better than Imitrex alone? From strict terms of treatment, yes, medication is probably better than Imitrex alone for a migraine. The reason for this is twofold. First, does several years, Dr. Silberstein, the Headache Center of Jefferson was able to demonstrate through research, combined with naprosyn Imitrex taken at the onset of a migraine was better in the treatment of migraine either drug alone. This combination is considered synergistic, ie basically two plus two equals ten. Naprosyn is a prescription Aleve which is sold without a prescription and is an anti-inflammatory. Once this research confirmed, GSK began to develop a drug combination.

The second reason that this drug could be better is something called RT technology. GSK has developed this and uses it now for Imitrex tablets. Think of it as "burst" technology of the tablet was brought down when it begins to dissolve. This may accelerate the absorption and speed is of the essence in the treatment of migraine wrong.

All the benefits of a separate treatment, Treximet really a lot? Well for some, perhaps no. One of the reasons for a combination of drugs is usually developed is because the original drug's patent is about to expire. And of course, that is what is happening to Imitrex this year. Unfortunately, samples of Imitrex are rapidly disappearing from doctor's offices. For those who have drug coverage prescription, the best response is to ask for a prescription for Naprosyn and take two pills at the onset of a migraine. In the absence of which could only take two Aleve tablets with your Imitrex.

For those without prescription drug coverage, hold on! Two pharmaceutical companies who make generic drugs have announced Imitrex going to be manufacturing sumatriptan (generic) in late 2008. Once available, it opens the availability of drugs for millions of patients with migraine who previously could not afford the drug. Even without coverage for prescription drugs, the generic may be cheap enough to afford to pay cash. The downside of generic drugs is, different fillers which are cheaper are used in manufacturing. GSK still holds the patent on the technology RT therefore very unlikely to be available in the generic sumatriptan.

Like all medicines in the class of triptans, can not take these medicines if you are pregnant, have uncontrolled hypertension or heart problems such as coronary artery disease. Check with your provider to be sure before taking any new medication and remember, early treatment and prompt treatment to get rid of migraines.
