What is the difference between a headache and a migraine?
I either headache or migraine but im not sure I took this morning tyonal Advil and a few hours ago, and none of them have contributed. So can someone tell me who is who and how I can stop the pain in my head?
People who have migraines describe the pain as shooting with visual problems, nausea, dizziness and other physical symptoms, while a simple headache is just the beat generalized. A sinus headache can be very resistant to Tylanol or Advil, but respond well to medication against allergies. In general a pain on the bridge of your nose or above eyebrows. My symptoms include numbness on one side of my face or sharp shooting pains at the base of my neck. If you have a blood pressure low, you can also experience headaches would be alleviated widespread with aspirin, but not necessarily by Tylanol or Advil. Aspirin or a cup of coffee would increase your b / w and make the pain go away. And then there is a dehydration headache, lack sleep headaches, and a vision problem caused by headaches. You have glasses? Do you drink your 8 glasses of water every day? (Excluding coffee or soda.) But you can eliminate possible causes and treatment obvious. If no cause can be identified here, maybe you arrive something. If you start running a fever to go to bed. Mee Hee

If you want to know more about migraines and migraine relief, here is some interesting information.
Before we start discussing ways in which to relieve a migraine, lets get a brief introduction to migraines.
An Introduction to Migraines
Had a throbbing pain in your head and neck that only affects one half at a time? This isn’t just any headache, this is a migraine attack. A migraine attack can plague anyone, from someone who is 10 to someone who is 90. During a migraine attack the blood vessels in the brain start dilating and drawing together. The changes that are occurring in the blood vessels is what is causing the pain. Not many people understand what a migraine is, and not many people have taken the trouble to get themselves properly diagnosed. Some people wonder if migraines are hereditary, the answer to this is not a definitive one. There are chances that migraines are hereditary but it hasn’t been proved. Interestingly, migraines plague 20% of the women population and only 6% of the men. Most people, who are prone to migraines, will get an attack before they hit 40! Most often, migraines are triggered off by certain conditions, and by foods like chocolates and cheese.
There are certain typical features that can help you identify whether or not that headache is a migraine or not. Features of a migraine are:
Headaches lasting from 4 hours to 72 hours.
Pain on one side of the head and neck.
Normal activity increases the intensity of the migraine.
Vomiting and nausea.
Sensitivity to light and noise.
Migraine Relief
There are some ways to relieve the pain caused by migraines; here are some alternative solutions to medication:
Grab a coke or coffee or anything with caffeine in it. caffeine helps to constrict the blood vessels in the brain. Also drink lots of water along with it, because dehydration can worsen a migraine attack.
If possible take a shower or a bath with warm water and press a cold compress to your head at the same time. Also steer clear of light and sound. Give yourself or get a face massage to improve blood circulation.
Soak your feet in warm water to increase blood circulation and prevent nausea. Aromatherapy is very good also.
Try herb therapy. Feverfew is a herb that helps relieve you from a migraine. You can use it fresh or take it in capsule form or as a tea additive.
Go gaga with ginger. Using ginger as a part of your diet will prevent migraines. In case you get a migraine attack, make tea with ginger in it. ginger is a great anti-inflammatory food and pain reliever.
Peppermint is another option. Using peppermint either internally or externally will help. You can make peppermint tea or use peppermint essential oil mixed with a lotion and massage your head. This is a great way to get instant relief from a migraine.
If you feel a migraine attack coming on, avoid all foods that can worsen the situation. Foods such as wheat, chocolate, and cheese. Also avoid alcohol and smoking.
If none of these work for you then take your migraine medication to get relief from migraines.

In 2005 24,000 people in America who suffered from headaches and migraine participated in a study carried out by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. The study involved a survey into the types of medications used to treat their headaches. The researchers chose those who had been diagnosed with fewer than fifteen days of headache per month to see whether they were at risk of developing chronic migraine.
The survey showed that those who used barbiturates and caffeine-containing drugs as pain relief were at risk of developing rebound headaches, also known as medication-overuse headaches. If taken to excess, or too often, these medications can worsen the migraine severity and frequency, making the problem harder to treat. By 2006, 209 of the people who had taken part in the study had developed chronic migraine.
It is also known that use of these drugs can cause further problems with people who have conditions such as cardiovascular disease and peptic ulcers, as well as pregnant or breast-feeding women. (Adapted from: American Academy of Neurology (2008, April 27). Overuse of Codeine, Oxycodone and Barbiturates Increases Risk Of Chronic Migraine. ScienceDaily.)
Other medications are widely available for preventing migraines but they are rarely wholly successful and they also have numerous side-effects. One of the most common forms of migraine treatments used by doctors is an anti depressant such as Amitriptyline. These are extremely addictive and when a patient stops taking them they may suffer debilitating withdrawal symptoms for many months. This should not be attempted without the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner.
Migraine sufferers are beginning to realise that prescription drugs simply aren’t effective unless they continually increase their doses. Prescription drugs focus on the source of the pain, and may bring in their wake side-effects that can be as unpleasant as the symptom they are intended to relieve. Because this is unacceptable to many people they are looking at complementary therapies, and taking a holistic approach. The side effects from natural remedies are usually less profound and there are no known addictions.
One such remedy is butterbur. "Bartram’s Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine" notes that butterbur is used for migraine of "liver origins". In Asia, Europe and regions of North America, where Butterbur grows naturally, extracts from the leaves and flowers have been used for centuries as a ‘folk remedy’. Conditions other than migraine that are believed to respond to Butterbur are allergies, asthma and stomach cramps. WARNING: As Butterbur is part of the ragweed plant family, it should not be used by anyone who is allergic to ragweed, daisy, chrysanthemum or marigold. It should NOT be used by pregnant women, or anyone with liver or kidney problems. It is unsuitable for use by children.
Modern studies suggest that Butterbur works by calming spasms in some muscle tissues and reducing inflammation of the walls of blood vessels.
A study, published in Neurology, suggests that use of an extract from Butterbur can reduce the frequency of migraines. The study, conducted by the Yeshiva University in New York, involved the use of a butterbur extract, Petodolex. The 245 people who took part in the study had experienced between two and six migraine attacks per month during the three months before the trial began. They stopped using their usual migraine-prevention medication at least three months earlier to remove all chemical toxins from their system.
The trial compared the effect of taking Butterbur extract over a four month period, using 50mg, 75mg doses twice a day and a placebo.
After four months of treatment, migraine frequency was reduced by 48% in those who used the 75mg dose, with a 26% reduction in the placebo group. Those who took the 50mg dose were found to have a 36% reduction in the frequency of migraines, and researchers felt this was not significantly different from the effects of the placebo. Significantly more people in the 75mg dose group had a 50% reduction in monthly migraine attacks than those in the placebo group. (Adapted from Neurology Dec 2004; 63:2240-4; Press releases from Yeshiva University).
Butterbur is known to have side effects which include indigestion, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation however, reports from the studies suggested that those using Butterbur only reported mild side effects, the most common being burping.
